CHAPTER 11

That night, long after Linc had started to softly snore, Brigid struggled to fall asleep. She’d done everything she could think of to try to become drowsy, but nothing seemed to help. She counted sheep. She thought about one of her latest favorite songs. She mentally ran through what they needed from the store. She’d even thought about rearranging the entry at the B & B, but no matter what she tried, her mind wouldn’t shut off and allow her to sleep.

As much as she tried to ignore it, she knew what the problem was. It was because she couldn’t stop dwelling on Holly leaving. She’d done everything she could to convince her brain that they could think about it later.

After all, it wasn’t as if Holly was leaving tomorrow, but she just couldn’t help worrying. She thought about where they would probably live and how they were going to be able to afford food, utilities, and everything else. She wondered if Holly knew how to cook well enough.

Holly cooked certain things and did a good job. But what about when no one was there to make sure she turned off the oven or tell her when her noodles were done?

And so it had gone for the past two hours as Brigid tossed and turned in bed. Just when she thought she was finished, she’d think of something else that she was sure Holly hadn’t learned yet, and that she needed to find time to teach her. How had this come about so quickly? Would the time Holly had left with her go just as fast? Or faster?

Brigid’s chest began to feel tight, so she opened her eyes and sat up. Forcing herself to breathe slowly and steadily, she inhaled deeply and then slowly exhaled. After a moment, the panic released her.

How long had it been since she’d felt this level of anxiety? She’d thought she’d left it behind in California along with her ex-husband, but apparently, she was wrong. Here it was, rearing its ugly head again. She hated the feeling of hopelessness it brought with it. Because no matter what, there was nothing she could do to stop this from happening, and she wasn’t sure she’d want to even if she could. Her mind was just too conflicted to rest.

Slipping out from under the covers, Brigid pushed her feet into her slippers before getting her bathrobe. Stepping around Jett, she headed to the hall. Jett got up and followed her out, slipping through the doorway as she was pulling the door closed behind her. The house was dark and quiet as she crept by Holly’s room. Lucky peeked his head out of the doorway to see what was going on, but quickly became disinterested and ducked back into Holly’s room.

“You don’t have to worry, you know,” Brigid told Jett as she headed for the kitchen. “I’m not up to anything interesting. You can go back to bed.” But he continued to follow her, his big brown eyes tracking her every movement with concern.
